Critique Series #7 : A Tribute to Pago-Pago
Oil on Sculpture
6’ 7” x 4’ 7” x 27”

Yusuf Ghani checking out "Tribute to Pago-Pago @ Galeriiizu

Critique series is a continuation of the sculptural ‘Bench’ series now residing at the Tapak (Yusuf Ghani’s art gallery) and Galleriiizu permanent collection and also ‘Ubud’ Series of oil paintings on canvas. It is a sort of self criticism to my own 2 dimensional paintings and 3 dimensional sculptures. Why just paint on two dimensional canvas when you can paint on 3-dimensional sculpture and vice-versa? This intuitive artistic dilemma triggers me to actually explore all possibilities; to the deepest depth of my paintings and at the same moment bringing my sculpture to a new height and subsequently giving the art piece a multi functional presence to the space. These triple pronged artistic endeavor is my personal experimentation to the physical occupation of mind and space, a catalyst to a spritual and metaphysical journey far beyond the limitation of time and space.

Critique Series #7 : A Tribute to Pago-Pago, one of several pieces from the 2005 Critique Series, is a reminiscence of the nostalgic bygone era, paying homage to one of the most significant and important period in the Malaysian art history. With no doubt, Pago-Pago Series by most prominent Master Painter/Poet, Latif Mohidin, lays down a solid foundation to the expressionist art movement in this region.

What a beautiful piece! Love your choice of mixed media. I recently have been vacationing and visiting many galleries. I saw some very interesting art done on slate/rock, which was beautiful too, which like your choice was something not on canvas. [THUMBUP][THUMBUP]

I went through your blogs and saw your bird series, your photographs. I have a thousand questions- What mediums are you using? What are your surfaces composed of? Your textures are as facinating as your colors. It might just be a trick of the camera, but one of your birds looks like it is inlaid with pepples, or is it brushwork? Beautiful! [THUMBUP]

Thank you for the effort to go through my blog… I used gesso + crushed corals from the sea to build up the texture for the surface of the paintings. Of course after layers and layers of oil paints it becomes richer and richer. As for the medium, I used oil paints, turpentine and linseed oil… STRICTLY NO CAMERA TRICK! [SMILE]
